How to choose disposable glove sizes and how to read numeric sizing

Glove size is one of those things everyone eyeballs, until something splits. Usually it's the material at the thumb that splits, or your patience, when after an hour of work your fingers are tired from gripping something that wasn't even heavy.


The problem is that the labels on the boxes come from three different worlds at once. The letter comes from a commercial convention, the number from an inch-based system, and the millimetre measurement from a technical standard almost nobody reads. This article ties these three things together, so you can go from a measured hand to a number on the box without guessing.


In short


  • The number in the label is hand circumference in inches. The conversion from numbers to letters and centimetres is in the table below.

  • Choosing a size requires two measurements: hand circumference excluding the thumb, and hand length from the wrist to the tip of the middle finger. That's how EN ISO 21420:2020 defines it.

  • For examination gloves, the EN 455-2 standard specifies the width of the glove laid flat: S is 80 ± 10 mm, M is 95 ± 10 mm, L is 110 ± 10 mm, with a length of at least 240 mm.

  • If your measurement falls between sizes, for a disposable glove the smaller one is usually better, because the material stretches, and excess forms folds.


Two labelling systems, one hand


You'll find two notations on boxes, and it's worth knowing that they describe exactly the same thing. The letters from XS to XXL are a commercial convention. The numbers came from English-speaking countries and carry a simple logic that a lot of people still don't know: the number is hand circumference expressed in inches.


Since an inch is 2.54 cm, converting one system into the other comes down to a single multiplication. The EN ISO 21420 standard provides sizes ranging from 4 to 13, though in disposable gloves you'll really only encounter the middle portion of that range in practice. The whole sizing scheme fits into one table:

Two notes need to be added to this table. The centimetre values are the midpoints of the sizes, not the boundaries of a range, because each manufacturer sets its own ranges around these midpoints and is entitled to. Above 13, the standard no longer provides any designations, so labels outside this range come from other systems, for example from workwear sizing.


How to measure your hand in two minutes


You'll need a tailor's tape measure, or a piece of string and a ruler.


  • Hand circumference. Wrap the tape around the palm at its widest point, meaning across the knuckles, excluding the thumb. The tape should sit snugly but not compress. Read the result in centimetres.

  • Hand length. Measure the distance from the wrist crease to the tip of the middle finger.


These two measurements weren't picked at random. The EN ISO 21420:2020 standard, which applies to protective gloves, bases its sizing system precisely on hand circumference and length, and provides sizes ranging from 4 to 13.


If your result falls exactly between sizes, the type of work decides. For a disposable nitrile glove, the smaller size usually works better, because the material has some stretch in reserve, and a loose glove forms folds at the gripping surface. For a thicker glove, or one worn for many hours without a break, the larger size can be the wiser choice.


Why the same size from two manufacturers isn't the same thing


This is the part that's missing from every popular size chart, and it explains most of the confusion.


The EN ISO 21420:2020 standard doesn't impose a single shared table. What it does require is that the manufacturer define its own sizing system and state which hands each label corresponds to. In other words, the letter on the box is the manufacturer's own declaration, not a unit of measurement.


The EN 455-2 standard, which applies to single-use medical gloves, goes even further. For examination gloves, meaning the ones bought in boxes of a hundred, it provides only for labels from Extra Small (XS) to Extra Large (XL). Numeric sizes don't feature in this table at all. The standard only adds a note that the manufacturer may optionally use the table intended for surgical gloves if it wants to offer a wider size range.


There are two takeaways, and both are practical. First, always check the chart for that specific product, not a general one. Second, when switching to another product, don't assume your usual M will be the same M.


The problem is broader than the labelling itself, too. In a study published in 2025, covering anthropometric measurements of healthcare workers at two hospitals in Canada, the authors noted that most manufacturers base their sizing on a single dimension, either circumference or hand length, with finger lengths fixed rigidly to the size. As a result, women and men wearing nominally the same size had statistically different hand dimensions. The hand is three-dimensional, and the sizing system is one-dimensional. That's where the compromises come from.


What the manufacturer actually measures: width in millimetres


This is the missing link between the tape measure and the box. You measure hand circumference, while the standard specifies the width of the glove laid flat, and its length.


The EN 455-2:2015 standard gives the following median values for examination gloves, measured on the glove laid flat, unstretched.

These two worlds can be connected with one observation. A glove laid flat is a flattened sleeve, so its width corresponds to roughly half the circumference of the hand it was designed for.


Let's check this against size 8. A circumference of 20.3 cm, meaning 203 mm, halved gives about 101 mm. The standard for Medium specifies 95 ± 10 mm, meaning a range of 85 to 105 mm. The value falls right in the middle. The same works for size 7, where half the circumference is about 89 mm against a range of 70 to 90 mm for Small (S), and for size 9, which comes out at about 114 mm against a range of 100 to 120 mm for Large (L).


Both systems describe the same hand, then, just from two different sides. One measures the hand, the other the glove.


Where half sizes come from


If you've ever seen a label like 7.5 or 8.5, they were almost certainly surgical gloves, or a product using the same scale.


Surgical gloves are sterile, anatomically shaped and made separately for the left and right hand, so fit precision matters differently there than for an examination glove. The EN 455-2 standard provides sizes from 5 to 9.5 in half-size steps, with width and length defined separately for each size.

Note that for size 8 the standard gives a width of 102 ± 6 mm, which is practically exactly half the 20.3 cm circumference. The whole system is internally consistent, it's just that nobody explains this on the box.


How to tell a size is wrong


The test takes a dozen or so seconds: just put the glove on and clench your fist:


  • Folds on the inside of the palm mean the size is too big. There's loose material at the gripping surface instead of a pressed-down surface, and that costs you grip confidence.

  • Empty fingertips are the same problem seen from another angle. A few millimetres of slack material at the fingertip is enough to lose feel and to stop a phone responding to touch.

  • The thumb fork is the most common tear point when the size is too small. If the material is visibly taut there just from putting the glove on, it won't last to the end of the task.

  • A cuff that slides down and a feeling of hand fatigue after an hour of work are signals that are easy to ignore, and just as reliable as the first two.


What the wrong size costs you


A glove always takes something away, the only question is how much.


Studies on how gloves affect grip strength show drops from 7.3 percent for cotton gloves to 16.8 percent when wearing two pairs at once. NIOSH researchers, measuring grip strength on cylindrical handles, identified glove thickness as one of the main factors behind this effect. These measurements concerned industrial gloves, much thicker than disposable ones, so the numbers shouldn't be applied directly, but the direction is clear: anything that pushes the hand further from the object costs strength.


The wrong size works in exactly the same way as excess thickness, because loose material at the gripping surface is simply an extra layer between the skin and the tool.


It's worth knowing that dexterity can be measured objectively. The EN ISO 21420 standard describes a test that involves picking up pins of decreasing diameter, from 11 down to 5 millimetres, while wearing the glove. The result is scored across five levels. In other words, “good feel” doesn't have to stay an impression, it can be expressed as a number.


Frequently asked questions about sizing


Is size M the same at every manufacturer? No. The EN ISO 21420 standard requires the manufacturer to define its own sizing system, so ranges can differ. When switching products, it's worth checking the specific model's chart.
